The Cultural Competency Workshops are designed to build cultural competency for professionals so that they can be more successful in a globalized workplace. The Cultural Competency Workshops will advance the careers of immigrants and refugees; will prepare the next generation of employees for companies with diverse staff, customers, or partners; and will develop the leadership skills of American professionals. . The series includes: Session 1: Cultural Competency, Parts 1 & 2 This introductory workshop will teach the steps to become culturally competent in a multicultural world. Part 1 focuses on personal cultural awareness and Part 2 covers cultural values that dictate behavior. Session 2: Identity- Individualism v. Collectivism Is your culture individual- or group-oriented? Session 3: Power Distance- Egalitarian v. Hierarchy How do different cultures interact with authority? Session 4: Communication- Direct v. Indirect Say what is on your mind or save face? Session 5: Time- Structured v. Unstructured, Linear v. Cyclical Should time be rigid or relaxed? Does time follow a straight path or repeat itself? Session 6: Status- Achieved v. Ascribed Are you a good candidate because of who you are or what you have done? Session 7: Action- Task-Oriented v. Relationship-Oriented When working with others, is it more important to do a task first or to build a relationship?
