Go-Betweener Group

Did you grow up in the United States, but come from another country and culture?

Did you speak English at school and another language at home with your parents?

Did you try to adapt to American habits and styles, but also adhere to your family’s culture and traditions at home?

Did you have to interpret for family members at doctor or school appointments and/or act as a "cultural broker," explaining traditional and/or American customs?

In other words, did you constantly go-between at least two cultures and languages?

If so, we invite you to join our Go-Betweeners Group where we get together for discussions, story-telling, sharing experiences, networking, and socializing.

Children of immigrants walk a fine line between two opposing cultures. On one side are the parents and centuries of ethnic traditions, and on the other, new (American) friends who tend to tease them, especially when they are young.

According to F. Scott Fitzgerald (American writer, 1896-1940):
"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function."

Go-Betweeners prove this on a daily basis!

Growing up between languages, cultures, traditions, and expectations can be stressful, confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming, and also just a normal part of life for 1.5 and 2nd generation immigrants/refugees/asylees. The Go-Betweeners Group is a space where 1.5 and 2nd generation young adults can share with each other their frustrations and set-backs, as well as strategies, accomplishments, and funny stories and, in the process, claim the rewarding, satisfying, and exhilarating aspects of being able to negotiate different languages, cultures, and traditions.
